Betty Ford Center Long Beach Alumni Chapter

This BFC Alumni Chapter Meeting began in Long Beach in August, 2000, and as far as I know, the eight founding members are all still sober and of service today.

The group draws alumni not just from Long Beach, but also Lakewood, Norwalk and the South Bay including the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Alumni also visit from North Orange County - Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Cypress and Cerritos.  Many industries/businesses are represented in the chapter, including the Port of Los Angeles, entertainment, printing, aerospace, etc. We usually have about 20 members present at every meeting and it is a fun, robust group.  As the Big Book says, we do not wish to relive the past, but to share the benefit of it with each other.  This group is definitely not a glum lot!

The Long Beach Chapter was one of the first adopters of the new meeting format, and we enjoy it very much.  It features a more inclusive position with respect to adding in materials from Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon.  We all agree it adds more to our alumni group experience.

We are still located at the same church near Long Beach State University.  The address is:  Unitarian Universalist Church, 5450 Atherton Street, Long Beach, CA.  Please join us each Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for a meeting that is full of sober support, recovery and fellowship!

Betty Ford Center 29th Anniversary Draws Hundreds to the Desert

A forecast of rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiastic gratitude of alumni who descended on Rancho Mirage to celebrate the Betty Ford Center’s 29th anniversary November 11-13.

Activities began with a golf tournament Friday morning that drew foursomes back to Desert Willow Country Club in Palm Desert.  On a personal note, one golfer who has played in the tournament for over 20 years planned his wedding for that date:  11-11-11.  His very understanding bride-to-be patiently waited until the tournament ended, and they married later that afternoon.<read more>
